Difference Between Hot Runner and Cold Runner

Cold Runner

Refers to the part between the mold entrance and the product gate. The plastic is kept flowing in the runner by the injection pressure and its own heat. The runner is part of the molding material, but it is not a product.

Hot Runner

As a common component of the injection mold system, heating is used to ensure that the plastic in the runner and gate remains molten. Since there is a heating rod and a heating ring near or in the center of the runner, the entire runner from the nozzle exit of the injection molding machine to the gate is in a high temperature state, so that the plastic in the runner is kept molten. Generally, there is no need to open the hot runner plastic injection mould to take out the condensate after shutdown. When the machine is turned on, it is only necessary to heat the runner to the required temperature.

The hot runner controller system is heated to ensure that the plastics in the runner and gate remain molten. The hot runner system generally consists of several parts such as a hot nozzle, a manifold, a temperature control box and accessories.

Hot Runner Controller System Advantages

Compared with cold runner molds, hot runner molds have the following significant advantages:

Hot Runner Controller System Advantages
1
Shorten the molding cycle of parts
2
Save plastic raw materials
3
Reduce waste and improve product quality
4
Eliminate follow-up procedures, which is conducive to production automation.
5
Expand the application of injection molding process

Because there is no restriction on the cooling time of the runner system, the parts can be ejected in time after they are solidified. Many thin-walled parts produced with hot runner molds can have a molding cycle of less than 5 seconds.

Since there is no cold runner in the pure hot runner mold, there is no production cost. This is especially significant for applications where plastics are expensive. Because hot runner technology is an effective way to reduce material costs.

During the molding process of the hot runner mold, the temperature of the plastic melt is accurately controlled in the runner system. Plastic can flow into each cavity in a more uniform state, resulting in parts with consistent quality. The gate quality of the parts formed by the hot runner is good, the residual stress after demolding is low, and the deformation of the parts is small.

After the parts are formed by the hot runner mold, they are finished products, and there is no need to trim the gate and recover the cold runner and other processes. Conducive to production automation.

Many advanced plastic molding processes are developed on the basis of hot runner technology. Such as PET pre-molding production, multi-color co-injection in the mold, multi-material co-injection process, STACK MOLD, etc.
